I will be in San Miguel de Allende in Jan - March and July - Sept of 2023. Although there is not yet an official schedule of workshops, the following will serve as a description. If you are traveling with other interested artists, contact me and I will arrange a custom workshop, just for you. Email: [email protected]
"If you can dress yourself, you can create!"
Join international, award-winning artist Robyn Cole for a 2-Day workshop in popular San Miguel de Allende to explore this innovative way to use oil paint. Robyn Cole, a California expat now living half year in San Miguel, teaches from her large home studio, featuring an incredible view, seen below.
All workshops are from 10 am to 4 pm and include an hour break for lunch. More details below.
This workshop is open to artists of all levels and interests. You'll have a great time discovering the magic of oil and cold wax medium in this two day class. Making art with oil and cold wax involves a lot of experimentation and a willingness to set out without knowing where you're going to end up. No experience in oil (or painting at all!) is needed. If you think you cannot draw, neither can I. If you think you are not creative, I've always said "If you can dress yourself, you can create!"
Artists will be introduced to methods of working in oil and cold wax through an intuitive process utilizing various non-traditional mark making tools. Cold wax (a mix of beeswax and natural solvents) is applied at room temperature and combined with oil paint to make a sensuous butter-cream texture — fun to work with! Combining this mixture in many layers with marks, collage elements, pigments etc., produces results with texture and depth that cannot be duplicated in any other medium. This is a different process from encaustic yet the look of oil & cold wax is a bit similar, but without any of the heating tools or potential for fumes!
Materials Provided For Your Use: cold wax, oil paints, pigment sticks, charcoal, pastels, brayers, rollers, palette knives, squeegees, scrapers, odd assortment of marking tools, oil paper and palette paper. Students leave with up to eight 4" x 4" paintings and/or works in progress and up to four 6" x 9" paintings and/or works in progress. Framing mats are not included.
Suggested items for you to bring: Something to transport paintings home (pizza box, box lid) If you want a specific color scheme – bring oil paints and pigment sticks Any specific tools you've wanted to try Lunch (or lunch money) and beverages
What to Expect: Students will learn basic concepts and techniques of oil/cold wax painting and to incorporate other media including oil pigment sticks, pencils, charcoal, powdered pigments, and oil pastel. Techniques include methods of application, building depth and texture, removing layers, reveals, masks and unique mark-making.
The workshop structure is relaxed and appropriate for artists at all levels. Teaching methods include demos, samples, handouts, and discussion. Students will have plenty of time to create up to eight 4" x 4" and four 6" x 9" paintings to take home, such as what is shown below. Or, you can work at a slower, more casual pace and focus on fewer pieces that you can return to at a later time.
Up to 12 PAINTINGS IN 2 DAYS FOR $375 USD OR PESO EQUIVALENT!
*: mats not included
We will not be painting with traditional brushes. You'll use a wide variety of texture tools like kitchen utensils, stencils, squeegees, and bowl scrapers. You'll learn to add pigment stick marks, and to incise and scrape back. You'll explore composition and color as you apply the oil paint and medium to a special, provided paper which needs no gesso. We'll work on a bunch of pieces at a time, so that you don't get bored watching paint dry.
